Riverwalk
Troll Picnic on the longest day of the year
June 21 Summer Solstice Event
on the Riverwalk extension
The Riverwalk Foundation is
hosting a brand new event to kick off the summer.
Families and friends are invited to the “Riverwalk Troll Picnic,” from
4PM
to twilight, Friday, June 21.
The event will be along the
Riverwalk extension near the Jaycees Gazebo with
many activities to commemorate the summer solstice, the longest day of
the
year.
Diane Hoffman is serving as
chairman of the event that is also the kick off
for the Fredenhagen Park fundraising campaign. Detailed architectural
drawings will be displayed and design architects, Riverwalk commissioners
and
foundation members will be available to answer questions.
Riverwalk novelties, raffles
and naming opportunities to support the new park
will be available to help raise $400,000 in private funds, a commitment
from
the Riverwalk Foundation to the city. To date, $169,000 have been pledged
to
the $1.8 million project approved for funding by the City Council.
On the future site of Fredenhagen
Park, painted lawn drawings will depict the
locations of the pavilion, fountain, arbors and other amenities planned
for
the park that is to be developed at the former site of the Cock Robin
Restaurant and creamery building.
An ensemble from the Naperville
Municipal Band will perform music in the
gazebo. Plans are for band members to march along the extension as well,
giving anyone who wants to join the parade an opportunity to participate.
And, of course, there will be a picnic with the new Riverwalk mascot,
the
friendly Riverwalk Troll. A picnic menu planned by My Chef Catering and
beverages will be available.
Star-gazing is also planned
with telescope instruction by members of the
Naperville Astronomical Association. Telescopes will be set up at stations
along the extension from the open field at Fredenhagen Park and near the
Jaycees Gazebo, the Mason's Plaza and MidAmerica Plaza.
Several games and activities
are also planned for this family event.
